Mechanical Engineering Manager - AxonVR - Virtual Reality Startup

About the position:

The mechanical engineering manager will be responsible for the directing a team of mechanical engineers working on production and R&D projects. This is a senior level position, designed for a person with experience in both engineering management and design. The perfect candidate would be able to mentor our current mechanical engineers, coordinate resources between different projects, help grow the team, and contribute to designs to take products from R&D and into production. This is a full-time position in San Luis Obispo, CA with a Q2 2017 start date

Essential duties include:

  • Coordination of mechanical engineers between R&D and production projects
  • Provide mentorship and technical leadership of more junior engineers
  • Initiating design improvement to turn R&D systems into customer products
  • Regularly provide feedback in design reviews
  • Facilitate communication between different engineering disciplines
  • Hire, train, and supervise future mechanical engineer
  • Conduct performance reviews
  • On an as needed basis, be willing to participate in all project stages including brainstorming, background research, specification setting, analysis, design, fabrication, validation, vendor selection, final assembly, and project postmortem

Required skills, expertise, and availability:

  • At least 10 years of industry experience in mechanical engineering, design, and product lifecycle design
  • At least 5 years of engineering management experience
  • Experience with 3D CAD programs (e.g. SolidWorks), GD&T, and PDM
  • Authorized to work in the US
  • Self-starter, independent, and risk tolerant
  • Motivated to learn and improve self and company
  • Proficient oral and written communication skills
  • Thrives in fast pace, constantly changing environment
  • Available to work 40 hours/week in San Luis Obispo, CA

Desired skills and experience:

  • BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering or relevant field
  • Experience in both R&D and production/manufacturing departments
  • Experience bringing a new product to market
  • Previous work with robotics, VR, wearables, powered prosthetics, or consumer electronics
